I found Openoffice to be very similar (but a bit more complex) to Google docs. Google docs, however, is based online and can provide more connections between users. This can be especially useful in writing collaborative assignments. This gives Google docs the advantage over Openoffice.
I have used Google docs in several of my classes at UHCL. This has been an incredible tool for working with classmates. I only wish that I would have known about it earlier.
I have used Open Office. In fact, it is all I have on my home computer, but the only thing I like about it is that it is free! I am learning a lot about Google docs, though, and I agree with you that it is a great collaborative tool. Our students are learning to use it, and I am waiting for some comments by them to see how they like it, but so far, they haven't said much.I am on TLA's Lariat Task Force, and that is how we keep up with the books we are reading. It also gives us a place to comment on the books so that others can see what we think and add to the discussion. I still have a lot to learn, though.
